In honour of International Nurses Day, Woodhurst Care Centre are delighted to spotlight the remarkable journey of our resident, Mary, a retired nurse whose dedication and passion for her profession continue to inspire.
Mary’s nursing career began in her early 30s, where she embarked on a journey that would see her balancing studies, long hours of work, and the care of her own family. Stationed at the Victoria Hospital in Glasgow, Mary’s nursing prowess shone brightly as she navigated the demanding realms of A&E, theatre, and ENT departments.
In those days, nurses operated under the strict control of matrons, facing expectations that often seemed impossible to meet. Despite the challenges, Mary persevered, driven by her unwavering commitment to patient care and fueled by her love for people.
Upon retirement at the age of 65, Mary found herself at a crossroads. Yet, her passion for nursing remained undiminished. Embracing the role of an agency nurse, she ventured into the homes of patients across Glasgow, working tirelessly, often during unsocial hours, to provide the care and support they needed. For Mary, the opportunity to traverse the city while caring for others brought immense joy and fulfillment.
Throughout her career, Mary’s mantra has been simple yet profound: “Enjoy your work and love your patients.” It’s a philosophy that encapsulates the essence of nursing — finding joy in the work we do and nurturing genuine connections with those in our care.
As we celebrate International Nurses Day, Mary’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the invaluable contributions nurses make to the lives of others. Her unwavering dedication, compassion, and love for her patients exemplify the very best of nursing.
To Mary and nurses everywhere, we extend our deepest gratitude and admiration. Your selfless dedication and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others make the world a better place. Thank you for all that you do.
