Residents at Collisdene Care Centre in Strathaven, part of Canterbury Care, are embarking on a special mission to enrich their community – and they need your support!
From now until 15th May, 2024, residents are participating in the Strathaven Sponsored Walk, a daily event aimed at raising funds for a unique project: the establishment of a home shop at the care center.
Collisdene Care Centre is deeply committed to fostering independence, learning, and a vibrant community life among its residents, who have learning disabilities. The innovative home shop project is a cornerstone of this commitment, providing residents with a chance to learn essential life skills in a supportive environment.
By actively involving residents in the shop’s operation, the initiative aims to empower them, boosting their confidence and independence. Moreover, the shop will serve as a social hub, fostering interactions among residents, staff, and visitors, and creating lasting bonds within the community.
The picturesque route for the walk, spanning 1.5 miles through the scenic countryside, was selected by residents Sean, Toni, and Robert themselves, adding a personal touch to the event.
Rosie Brennan, activities coordinator at Collisdene, expressed her excitement about the event, emphasising its role in building a stronger, more connected community. She said, “This walk is not just about fundraising, but about building a stronger, more connected community. We are thrilled at the prospect of bringing everyone together for such a positive cause.”
The establishment of the home shop is eagerly anticipated by the entire community at Collisdene. As Rosie Brennan noted, “The shop will be a wonderful addition to the facilities at Collisdene, and we’re all very excited about raising money, preparing the shop, and getting it open.”
Collisdene Care Centre, which provides 24-hour individualised nursing care for people with learning disabilities, including physical and sensory impairments, sees this project as a testament to its ongoing commitment to enhancing residents’ lives through innovative and inclusive activities.
