Hugh Freeland, an 88-year-old resident at Woodhurst Care Centre in Carluke, is still glowing from an incredible day at Fir Park. A lifelong supporter of Motherwell FC, Hugh had long harboured a wish to see his favourite team in action once again. That wish came true recently, when Hugh, accompanied by Susan Aitken, the Activities Coordinator at Woodhurst, made the trip to watch The Well face off against St Mirren.
On a crisp and lively afternoon, Hugh’s dream was finally realised, and he was treated to an unforgettable 2-1 victory for his beloved Motherwell. “I’d love to see another Motherwell match… that would be my dream,” Hugh had shared, and the team certainly didn’t disappoint. The joy and excitement were infectious, with Hugh describing it as “one of the best afternoons of my life.”
It wasn’t just the result that made the day so special—Hugh was warmly welcomed by everyone at Fir Park, and fellow supporters even joked that he should come every week as a lucky charm!
Susan Aitken, who accompanied Hugh to the game, reflected on the day: “It was heart-warming to see Hugh so happy. He’s been a loyal Motherwell fan for years, and watching him join in with the crowd was just wonderful. These moments are what we strive for, bringing joy and creating memories that last.”
Lisa Thomson, the Home Manager at Woodhurst, added: “We’re delighted we could make this happen for Hugh. It’s a wonderful reminder of how important it is to keep our residents connected to their passions, whether through trips, activities, or involvement in the local community. Seeing Hugh’s face light up is the reason we do what we do.”
The day at Fir Park is sure to be a cherished memory for Hugh and all involved at Woodhurst Care Centre.
